Dempsey’s History and Career
Nacogdoches, Texas, is where Clint Dempsey is. He got his start in football for the New England Revolution by being the eighth pick in the 2004 MLS Superdraft.
At the beginning of his career, he played as a central midfielder, but gradually he was placed further forward, becoming an attacking midfielder until he became a striker at the end of his career.
Dempsey helped the Revolution reach two MLS Finals, in 2005 and 2006, as well as winning the US Open Cup in 2006.
In 2007, the year in which Clint Dempsey’s wife came into the scene, he began his European adventure.
He went on to act for Fulham, who signed him for $4 million. There were 50 goals in 184 games at Craven Cottage, where he stayed from 2007 to 2012. Then he played a season for Tottenham, with 43 games and 12 goals scored.
That’s when he decided to return to MLS. The Seattle Sounders paid $9 million and signed the player to a four-year contract.
Return to the MLS
Dempsey’s return to the American league in 2013 was considered a very important step by local experts. For them, this meant the growth of the MLS and, consequently, a chance to attract world-class players to the country’s clubs.
The main reason for this is that he was at the height of his career and everyone imagined that he would look to try to keep shining on European soil.
The Seattle coach himself at the time spoke about the importance of Clint’s arrival and how it would forever change American football. That step would be a demonstration that American footballers could return home and even high-profile foreigners could be part of a rising league.
And it worked. Nowadays the MLS has very interesting games and in recent years we have seen several world stars being part of participating teams in the league such as David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
US National Team
Dempsey is the only US male player to score in three consecutive World Cups for the country and many can thank it for how tall is Clint Dempsey, as headers were his strong point. There were 57 goals for his country which places him as the top scorer of the US team next to Landon Donovan.
For the national team, he was part of the historic campaign in the 2009 Confederations Cup, in addition to winning the Gold Cup three times. He is also one of the players that had more appearances with the US shirt, being in third place with a total of 141 caps.
Retirement
If you want to know where Clint Dempsey is now, the answer is: Retired. In 2018, Clint took fans and even the American press by surprise by announcing his retirement even before the season ended.
In the end, many thought it might have something to do with the physical problems that kept him off the field in past years. In 2016, for example, he kept away from football due to a heart condition, although he helped the team in part of the campaign that led the club to the MLS title.
In his message, Dempsey said he had thought a lot with his family and, in the end, concluded that it was the right time to leave the sport he loved so much. Of course, he did not fail to thank all those who supported him and gave him the chance to follow his biggest dream. Special thanks went to the teams that gave him chances to show his football, namely:
- New England
- Tottenham
- Fulham
- Seattle
In addition, there was also a special thanks to the US National Team, the team for which Clint made history throughout his career and became an idol of his country.
